New Emergency Response Plan Launches in April

New Emergency Response Plan Launches in April
hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, shelter

Starting April 14, 2025, we will implement a new emergency response plan called the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to enhance safety, security, and communication during emergencies.

The new plan uses easy-to-understand language and simple steps to follow during different situations, big or small. This makes sure everyone knows what to do, whether it’s a small issue, a safety precaution, or an emergency. It is used by schools and districts across the country, giving students, staff, families, communities, and first responders a common language and course of action.

There are five actions staff or law enforcement can use to keep our staff and students safe: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, and SHELTER. In this new system, we will no longer use "Modified Lockdown." Instead, we have actions like "Hold" and "Secure," which have clearly defined steps.

Each action can be used for different situations, giving everyone a clear and safe way to respond.  Staff and students will be trained to respond quickly and confidently.

  1. HOLD: Everyone stays in classrooms until the situation is clear. This could be used for an altercation in the hallway or a medical issue that needs attention.
  2. SECURE: All doors are locked; activities continue inside while staff ensure the school is secure. This could be used for police activity in the area or an unknown person on the grounds.
  3. LOCKDOWN: Immediate action to lock doors, turn off lights, and stay out of sight in case of a serious threat. This could be used for a report of a weapon or an intruder.
  4. EVACUATE: Safe and orderly evacuation from the building. This could be used for a suspected fire or gas leak.
  5. SHELTER: Protecting from environmental hazards like severe weather or earthquakes. This could be used because of an earthquake or severe weather.

To prepare for this change, we will provide training and resources to help students, staff, and families understand the Standard Response Protocol. Together, we can ensure our schools are safe and prepared to respond effectively in any situation. Thank you for your partnership in prioritizing safety in our community.
