Literacy Comes to Life in Science Labs

Literacy Comes to Life in Science Labs

In Focus: Tyee High School

When students read with understanding, and speak and write with confidence, they have a leg up on learning. That’s why teachers across Highline are building literacy skills in every school and every grade.

At Tyee High School, biology teacher Satprit Kaur uses science to strengthen student's reading and writing skills and expand their academic vocabulary. Students read scientific texts, write about their lab results, and use scientific vocabulary to explain their thinking and work.

As a result, students deepen their understanding of scientific concepts and communicate ideas clearly. These skills extend far beyond the science lab.

Literacy opens doors, and it’s one of Highline’s four priority areas. When students learn to think critically and communicate effectively, they can thrive in school, career and beyond.

See how Tyee students are using literacy to make sense of science.

What’s happening at Tyee is happening across schools in Highline.

From sounding out words in elementary school to building academic vocabulary in high school, Highline educators are focused on helping all students become confident readers and writers. Learn more about how we’re supporting readers at every stage.
